Hello friends, I just wanted to share one of my projects of the summer with you! My roommates and I created a garden out of the weeds and scrubs in the backyard.

And here is what it looks like now!
From the left there are tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, banana peppers, carrots, spinach, lettuce and cucumbers. We also put flowers along the outside of the vegetables and plan to have a portable bon fire pit next to the bench. So I'll let you guys know when we get the pit and we can have a bon fire! Hope all is well=)
Here's a little secret...Ben from Ben's Virtual Ecosystem is obsessed with those claw machines where you can win stuffed animals from! So the other day he won me another stuffed animal...and let me tell you that it was really cute;) But it turned out that it was "green stuffed!" It was stuffed with eco-friendly stuffing. So I thought I'd share his green efforts! Very good grab Ben!

I thought her post about Gardening Advice from Living North was very eco-friendly and has inspired me to want my very own garden! Ok so, I finally get to do a post about Grey’s Anatomy!!! For those of you who don’t know, it is my favorite show and after watching last week’s episode, all I could think was SHARE AND VOICE!
Anyway, on last Thursday’s show there was a patient named Karen (but she called herself Willow.) Willow had fallen out of a tree and broke all her limbs! What was she doing in a tree you might ask? She was living in it of course. She had been living in a beautiful 200-year-old tree, named Kylee for the past 6 weeks. Willow was bulldozed out of the tree “Kylee” so a company could clear cut acres to build another ski condo complex. She kept blaming her pain on “those corporate bastards” and had planned to be up in a tree in Utah, in a few weeks. However, this was not possible due to her severe injuries.
After Willow’s sister talked with those “corporate bastards” they agreed to pay the medical bills and not sue her for trespassing, only if she wouldn’t sue them and never trespass on any of their properties ever again. Willow denied the agreement because she wanted to stand up and fight for the acres of forest they have single handedly destroyed. She was so concerned about the environment; issues like “the bees dying and the temperatures rising” were part of her explanation. Before she could explain further, she was rushed into emergency surgery.
Although, Willow’s efforts were a little extreme it was interesting to see how strong her character felt about the environment, more specifically the forests that continue to be cut down. Now, I’m not going to tell you how it all rolls out, I’m not even going to tell you if she survives. But I encourage you to watch last week’s episode to find out! Soooo I was at Target the other day (not referring to the trip with Heather) browsing through the dollar section and stumbled upon this little book, "Green Living for Dummies." The one I found and purchased is the pocket edition by Yvonne Jeffery, Liz Barclay, and Michael Grosvenor. Throughout the book you'll find ways to work greener transportation into your lifestyle, the best ways to eat locally and organically, how to rid your life of clutter, and tips for conserving water and energy in your home!
After reading half of the book so far I've realized that many of the topics they cover are things we've been learning about all semester!
Here are some fun tips the book suggests: Do laundry only when you have a full load. Line-dry your clothes. Skip the pre-rinse if your dishwasher gets the dishes clean without it. Recycle the sink rinse water by using it to wash windows, floors, or the car, to flush the toilet, or to water the garden. Choose items that have little or no packaging and that come in recyclable or refillable containers. Reuse paper that has only been used on one side.

I hope you're enjoying this week off from most of our health courses! I am doing some research on recycling for another class and was hoping you could help me out! I have created a survey to determine what UMD students know about recycling and if it is important to them. If you could complete the survey AS HONEST AS POSSIBLE that would be a great help! It's Friday night and I'm just up blogging and doing homework and thought of this random blog. (FYI: I'm not always this cool but I just got off work and have to be back in t minus six hours=)
Kegs are environmentally friendly, safer, and the cheaper alternative.
According to this article: Kegs reduce the waste associated with canned beers, and keg registration also provides an easier way for the University to monitor alcohol consumption.
Kegs take up less space and cost half as much as their equivalent volume in cans, which is a benefit that legal students should be able to take advantage of in a responsible fashion.
Attn friends 21+...Next time, consider the environment when drinking with friends and get a keg. ;)
Organic Hair Products: Ok so last semester in Women’s Health Issues (which is the best class ever-fyi) we learned about organic products. I found that they were better than other products because they are:
• Extremely friendly with the environment • Totally natural • Becoming more easily available • Last but not least… paraben free! Parabens are found in practically every product you already have. To learn more about parabens and why you should avoid them check out this website.
I know that they are a little pricey but I really wanted to try them, so I asked for them for my Birthday.=) So far I’ve tried two different brands: Yes to Carrots and Kiss My Face. I like how they don’t make me my hair feel so waxy like other ordinary brands do. I have also noticed that I barley use any conditioner with these brands. The Kiss My Face shampoo and condition are herbal scented so it is actually relaxing to wash your hair.
If you have questions about these, two you should let me know. Otherwise, just try them. What do you have to lose?
OK…this is probably the best YouTube video I’ve found yet! Drum roll, please!... How to save money and water every time you flush!!!
I know I’ve already shared how my house rule is to let it mellow if it’s yellow, well with this new toilet technique my roommates and I can flush more often and save money. Please watch the video and join me in my efforts to save money, water, and the environment one flush at a time!!! Here's a breakdown of how it works: So, because the half gallon of water would already be in your toilet, every time you flush it will save a half gallon of water. Get it? (Please let me know if you need a further explanation!) Can you imagine the water you can save in one month-that's amazing!!! I'm going to try it tonight when I get home, let me know if it works for you!
Ok I love a good deal and I love saving money…so this really caught my eye! Here is one youtube video that gives some great tips for helping us save money. $)
Conserve Energy!!! First you can start by taking the energy audit at eere.energy.gov. This estimates just how good your house is at saving energy. According to the video, the average house looses 20% of its heat or it’s A/C from leaky ducks and drafts coming from doors and windows. This really makes me want to put plastic over my windows next winter!
Another important tip is to unplug vampire devices! These are your everyday appliances that you leave on all day when you’re not using them. You can also switch to energystar appliances, I just bought a new printer today and it’s an energystar appliance! (woo-woo!) To find more about energy star appliances go to their website at energystar.gov. According to the video 5% of your energy bill is from everyday things plugged in all day…time to start unplugging!
Lastly, for the shocker! So you know those flat screen TVs everyone is buying…they’re actually energy hogs! Woah, who knew? I kind of still want one but the tip the video gives is to be sure to not leave them on when they’re not in use.
